The 4 marketing traps quietly killing your lead gen (and how one agency fixed them)

Most expert-led businesses assume a lead-gen problem comes down to traffic, spend, or audience size. It rarely does.

Adam Bonner, founder of Convertico – an agency that works with coaches, professional speakers, and authors – has audited enough of these businesses to know the real issue almost always sits somewhere else: in how the assessment or scorecard itself is built. As he puts it, “a confused mind won’t buy.” Get someone curious, then confuse or overwhelm them, and the sale never had a chance.

Here are the four traps he sees most often, with the real numbers behind each fix.

Trap one: copying what worked for someone else

It’s tempting to see a competitor’s scorecard crushing it and replicate the structure, questions, and promise. But the asset was never the whole story – it was the audience, trust, and context behind it. Strip those out and you’re left holding a template that does nothing on its own.

Trap two: the curse of knowledge

This is the one Adam sees most. Experts build the assessment they’d want to take – deep, rigorous, comprehensive – for a lead who is still just curious.

One of his clients, a communications coach helping people who’d been passed over for promotion, had built a 50-question diagnostic. It was thorough. It was also too much to ask of someone who didn’t know him yet. Adam’s team stripped it back to 15 questions and simplified the promise to something concrete: three techniques the person could use in their very next interview.

Conversion went from 3% to 35%.

Same expertise. The only thing that changed was how much of it they asked the lead to sit through before delivering value.

Trap three: making it about you

Experts like talking about their own credentials, methodology, and story. Leads don’t care – not yet. They want to know what’s in it for them.

Adam gives the example of a US client running a competition tied to the World Cup, giving away kit to grassroots sports clubs. The original landing page spent most of its space explaining who the brand was. Once it was rewritten to invite clubs to tell their own story instead, the same ad spend produced 1,400 leads in a single month.

The follow-up trap: generic personalization (or none at all)

Once someone completes an assessment, most businesses either ignore what they said or personalize using information the person never actually gave them. Both kill trust.

The sweet spot: reference what they told you, in the way they told you it. Adam’s team worked with a client in commercial property whose scorecard asked whether leads had niched down their investment strategy. Referencing that single answer in the first follow-up email – nothing invasive, just “we noticed you said no, here’s what we typically see at that stage” – took follow-up call conversion from 30% to 60%.

The bonus: the data is the gift

The traps aren’t the only opportunity. Every completed assessment is a data point, and most businesses look at the leads it brought in without ever zooming out to the population. One client’s scorecard picked up 65,000 completions after a single podcast appearance. Rather than treating that as 65,000 individual leads, the patterns across all of them were used to build a new offer – one that unlocked a multi-six-figure income stream.

Where ScoreApp fits

Adam’s take, in his own words: “ScoreApp is the most effective tool I’ve used in the last five years to help scale and grow expert-led businesses.”

We’d add: the platform exists specifically to make these traps harder to fall into – shorter, focused assessments by default, follow-up sequences that can reference real answers, and reporting that surfaces the patterns across every response, not just the leads.

Want the full breakdown? Adam’s put all four traps – plus the bonus on data – into a companion guide, with the fixes for each one.
